Edmonds was founded by logger George Brackett, who purchased waterfront timber acreage in 1876. The city thrived for decades as a mill town producing red cedar shingles, incorporating in 1890.

The last of the city’s shingle mills closed in 1951, and as growth continued through the mid-20th century, city leaders deliberately limited new apartment construction to keep the downtown feeling rural.
