The Black River itself, once a significant waterway, largely disappeared after the 1916 lowering of Lake Washington for the ship canal project cut off its source, leaving only a small remnant stream today. Tukwila’s population remained under 4,000 through the 1960s before commercial development at Southcenter and along the I-5 corridor drove substantial growth in subsequent decades.
